We gain weight as we grow. A few pounds over the years are not a problem but a rapid increase in weight as compared to the age results in a number of health problems. The associated risk of heart disease and cancer develops rapidly in women. But, by keeping the weight in a healthy range, this can be avoided. You must have heard that to lose weight you must burn calories. Unfortunately, this is not as easy as it sounds. People tend to go on crash diets and adopt unhealthy eating patterns thinking that it might help them shed a few ounces of flab, but end up gaining more weight.

For several people losing weight means intensive dieting, obsessive calorie counting, and self-deprivation. Dieting of this type leads to failure because suffering a great deal adding to your misery. But by adapting healthy habits we can lose weight the healthy way. Experts suggest that losing weight slowly and steadily is healthier than remaining overweight. Therefore, we should start with realistic and achievable goals. We should try to lose a few pounds per week, because miracles don’t take place in weight loss. You cannot continue with your current eating habits if you are overweight.

It’s not possible to lose weight while eating lots of food, cakes and sweets. This doesn’t mean that you can never have them, but you should watch out for the quantity. By eating less and making healthier choices the body use up the existing stores of fat. There are no short cuts to losing weight the healthy way. But we can lose one to two pounds per week by eating 300-500 calories per day. You should be aware that out of all food types fats contain the maximum amount of calories. So, a good way to achieve your fat burning goals is by cutting down the intake of junk foods and eating more of whole grain bread, fruits and vegetables.

Healthy ways of reducing weight:

1. Drink lots of water instead of fizzy drinks and fruit cordials.
2. Drink milk instead of semi-skimmed, or semi-skimmed for skimmed.
3. Eat lesser amounts of food than usual.
4. Avoid the intake of tea or coffee with sugar.
5. Take smaller portions of the food that you enjoy.
6. Avoid a second helping at dinner.
7. Unhealthy treats like confectionaries; sugar biscuits and crisps between meals should be cut down.
8. Cut down on beer or alcohol.

All these things influence health in a positive way. Last but not the least; you should not try to skip breakfast or any other meals to lose weight. While skipping meals will reduce your calorie intake for that hour, it will leave you hungrier. Irregular habits of eating also effect and disrupt the body’s metabolism, which makes it harder to lose weight in the first place.

There are many healthy ways by means of which you can lose weight without succumbing to crash diets or strenuous exercises. The body likes slow changes in terms of food and exercise.

The food we consume is used by the body for energy. The excess energy that we intake is stored as fat in the body. This means if you consume more food than your body requires for daily activities and cell maintenance, you will gain weight.

For loosing weight we need to get our body to use up these stores of fat.
The most effective way to do this is given below:

1. Reduce the intake of calories.
2. Increase the levels of activity.

For this reason experts talk about weight loss in terms of diets and exercises.
Small changes can make a big difference.

We should not stick to our eating habits permanently when we think of losing weight. While goals set for loosing weight are usually set in terms of weeks, but the end result lies in sustaining these changes over months and years.

By using the same amount of exercise and maintaining the same diet and calorie intake you would certainly lose weight. Visiting gyms and fitness centers helps a lot. Even light exercises such as a short 20 minutes walk will be beneficial if done on regular basis.

The amount of activity can be increased by indulging in team sports, racket sports, aerobic classes, running, walking, swimming and cycling that will improve the fitness levels of the body.
